Kendrapara, Feb 26 (Reporter) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought additional information regarding the death of three workers in a sewage tank at an apartment in Trisulia, in Odisha's Cuttack district, in September last year. The District Magistrate of Cuttack has been directed to ensure the necessary action and submit an action taken report to the Commission within four weeks, positively, for further consideration by the Commission,” the NHRC stated in its latest order on Monday. The Commission passed the order on February 24, acting on a petition filed by Sagar Jena of Kajala village, in Kendrapara. Jena, in his complaint, alleged that three labourers died of asphyxiation when they entered the septic tank of an apartment in Trisulia, Odisha’s Cuttack district, on September 6, 2024, to remove centering from the roof of the tank. The three workers were rescued with the help of Baranga Fire personnel and the Police and rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where doctors declared them dead. The deceased were identified as Abu Taheer Ali (36), Almin Sheikh (27), and Krishna Kishore Sarkar (38), all from Nadia district in West Bengal. Jena sought the intervention of the Commission for compensation to the next of kin (NoK) of the deceased and action against the officials responsible for the mishap. The Commission, via proceedings dated November 7, 2024, transmitted a copy of the complaint to the District Magistrate of Cuttack, directing necessary action as per the Supreme Court’s directives in sewer-related death cases and submission of an action taken report within four weeks. In response to the Commission’s directives, only forwarding letters have been received, but the requisite reports from the concerned authorities remain pending.
