Kolkata, May 29 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday paid tribute to legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay on his 111th birth anniversary as well as his historical achievement to scale the world's tallest peak Mount Everest on this day in 1953.
He along with New Zealander Edmund Hillary reached the world highest spot Everest ( 8848 mts) and became one of the two first humans to reach there on May 29, 1953.
At 29,035 feet above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest point on earth and to scale this summit is a feat in itself.
Norgay, who settled in Darjeeling in West Bengal, and became the life-long advisor of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute ( HMI), founded by India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and then West Bengal chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy, used to tell the HMI students that he scaled the atop the Everest in his 7th attempt.
"I convey my tribute to the legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay Sherpa whose 111th birth anniversary is being celebrated today," Mamata said.
"His courage continues to inspire adventurers around the world. Today also marks the 72nd Everest Day, honouring the historic first successful ascent of Mount Everest by him and Sir Edmund Hillary.
