Bengaluru, Apr 9 (Reporter) The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on the bail application filed by Kannada actress Harshavardhini Ranya Rao, who has been arrested in connection with a high-profile gold smuggling case.
Justice S Vishwajith Shetty, hearing the criminal petition, directed the agency to file its objections by April 17, the next date of hearing. The court was moved after both the Magistrate and Sessions Court had earlier rejected her bail applications.
Ranya Rao was arrested following the seizure of gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Subsequent searches at her residence led to the recovery of gold jewellery valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Indian currency amounting to Rs 2.67 crore.
The actor has been booked under multiple provisions of the Customs Act, including Sections 135(1)(a), 135(1)(b), 135(1)(a)(i)(a), 135(1)(a)(i)(b), 135(1)(b)(i)(a), 135(1)(b)(i)(b), and Sections 104(4)(a), 104(4)(b), 104(6)(a) and 104(6)(c).
Meanwhile, the court had earlier allowed an interim order on a plea filed by her parents seeking to restrain media houses from publishing or telecasting defamatory content against the actress and her father, K Ramchandra Rao, an IPS officer.
