Shimla, March 2 (Reporter) Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh witnessed multiple avalanches following continuous snowfall over the past three days.
Two major snow slides occurred in the region, one near Mooling, 12 km from district headquarters Keylong, and another near the north portal of Atal Tunnel at Yudling Nala.
The Mooling avalanche temporarily blocked the flow of the Chandra River, while the latter damaged a signboard on the Manali-Leh Highway and impacted a food van and a roadside eatery.
The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has successfully cleared the southern portal of the Atal Tunnel, but electricity and road connectivity in Lahaul remain disrupted.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) post near Gyu in Kaza subdivision narrowly escaped an avalanche, with the snowstorm reaching just 200 meters from their camp. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In the past four days, Lahaul-Spiti has witnessed heavy snowfall, with residential areas buried under two to three feet of snow, and higher elevations accumulating nearly six feet.
The continuous snowfall has led to increased avalanche risks. BRO teams are working tirelessly to clear debris, but power outages and communication disruptions persist.
Meanwhile, in Kinnaur, an avalanche at Tinku Nala near Pooh stranded 22 vehicles and 125 people. The district administration has provided food and shelter for stranded tourists in Pooh. Restoration work at Tinku Nala is in progress, and traffic movement is expected to resume by Monday morning.
Road connectivity in several parts of Himachal remains affected. The Karcham-Sangla road is open, but Pooh to Khab remains blocked due to a landslide. The district administration has urged travellers to avoid unnecessary movement as BRO and local authorities continue road clearance efforts...////...
