Bengal Junior medics continue sit-in-demonstration in Kolkata

Kolkata, Oct 5 (Reporter) The junior medics of the state-owned hospitals have called off their second phase indefinite cease work but continued the sit-in-demonstration at Esplanade here with an ultimatum to go on hunger strike for indefinite period starting midnight tonight until their 10-point demands were conceded by the West Bengal government, official sources said . The medics under the banner of West Bengal Junior Doctors Front (WBJDF) on Friday night announced to call off their cease work, which began from October 1 but continue the sit-in-demonstration at DorinaCrossings ( Esplanade) until the government met their demands. The medics also set a deadline to the government to consider their demands or else they would resort to an indefinite hunger strike, scheduled to start tonight, Dr Debashish Haldar said. Reports also said the majority of the junior medics in response to the WBJDF decision began work at their respective hospitals this morning. They also warned that they will not return to full ceasework till the government conceded their demands like immediate action on safety, patient services, and what they described as the "politics of threat culture". The WBJDF demanded justice for the murdered post-graduate trainee doctor in the judicial process, removal of the health secretary Narayan Swarooop Nigam, implementation of a centralised referral system across all hospitals and medical colleges. The doctors also demanded to establish digital bed vacancy monitors in all hospitals, creation of task forces in each hospital, with junior doctors elected to oversee essential facilities like CCTV, on-call rooms, and bathrooms. Besides, increasing police protection in the hospitals, hiring permanent female police personnel, immediate filling of vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers. Formation of inquiry committees to investigate threat syndicates, with one committee established at the state level. They also demanded immediate elections for student councils and recognition of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) in all medical colleges and investigation into corruption within the WBMC (West Bengal Medical Council) and WBHRB (West Bengal Health Recruitment Board)...////...
