Itanagar, Apr 20 (Reporter) In a solemn yet proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, the State Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik on Sunday virtually inaugurated a War Memorial at Longding in honour of Lance Naik Agoi Wangsa, Shaurya Chakra (posthumous), a valiant son of the state who laid down his life during a counter-insurgency operation in Punjab in 1992.
Paying heartfelt tributes, Governor Parnaik said, “The Indian Army, the State, and the Nation salute the unmatched bravery and sacrifice of Lance Naik Agoi Wangsa.” He also lauded the strength and resilience of Veer Nari, Koiman Wangsa, the late soldier’s wife, and assured the family of continued support from the state administration.
Reflecting on the heroism of L/Nk Agoi Wangsa, Parnaik described the inauguration as both a solemn and proud moment, marking a powerful tribute to the bravery of those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation. He noted that the War Memorial serves not only as a monument of remembrance but also as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
“This memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of our heroes of past, present, and future,” the Governor said, urging citizens to uphold the legacy of the brave hearts and extend unwavering support to their families.
Recalling the gallant action of L/Nk Wangsa during ‘Operation Rakshak’ in Punjab, the Governor highlighted the soldier’s fearless advance under heavy fire in a village in Amritsar district, leading to the elimination of two militants of the ‘United Liberation Khalistan’ outfit and the recovery of arms and ammunition, and saving lives of two police personnel.
Though grievously injured, Wangsa’s actions led to the successful completion of the mission. For his exemplary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on August 15, 1993.
Highlighting the proud military tradition of Longding, the Governor said that the district has a rich legacy of brave sons and daughters serving in the Armed Forces. He lauded the significant presence of ex-servicemen as a testament to its deep-rooted patriotic spirit.
“The War Memorial is not just a structure, it is a call to duty, honour, and sacrifice,” the Governor remarked, while adding that the people of Arunachal Pradesh, especially in border districts like Longding, have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the nation in times of need.
A host of dignitaries including State Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, Longding MLA Thangwang Wangham, Pongchau-Wakka MLA Honchun Ngandam, IG AR (North) Major General Manish Kumar, and Commander of 25 Sector Assam Rifles, Brig Sarabjeet Singh attended the event.
