Kangra, Apr 4 (Reporter) Himachal Pradesh on Friday observed the 120th anniversary of the devastating earthquake, one of the most devastating tremors in Indian history, by bringing out rallies and holding street plays. The quake that struck the Kangra region on April 4, 1905, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damage. The epicentre of the earthquake was near Kangra city, and destroyed villages and towns across the region. The district headquarters, Dharamsala, suffered heavy damage, and many buildings collapsed. The most tragic loss occurred in Kangra city, where thousands of people died under the rubble of their homes. The disaster took the lives of about 20,000 people and injured many more. The region's infrastructure was ruined, which hindered relief efforts. Despite the massive destruction, the earthquake also brought about significant changes in the way India manages disasters, resulting in increased awareness and preparedness in the following decades. In memory of the quake, the district administration today took out a march from DC office to Police Ground Dharamshala where officers and employees of various departments, including the Deputy Commissioner's office, and representatives of educational institutions and school children participated in the march. In the program organised at Police Ground in memory of the Kangra earthquake, children from educational institutions gave speeches on topics related to earthquakes and natural disasters, and artists presented street plays. While chairing the programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Kumar asked everyone to learn a lesson from the 1905 earthquake and be alert and cautious about natural disasters.
