New Delhi, March 07 (Reporter) Amid the rise in number of deaths due to sudden collapse of teenagers and youngsters, scientists and doctors of Kerala’s Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences have discovered a new mutation in the gene that can be treated on time to prevent such deaths to a great extent. The prestigious journal of Cardiological Society of India, Indian Heart Journal, has published a research paper about this serious condition caused by ‘MYH7’ gene that causes heart-related diseases. Dr. Kumar Ratnjeet and Dr. Sivadasanpillai Harikrishnan of the Cardiology Department of Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences have stated in this article that the disease caused by this mutation gene – hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a type of genetic condition in which the heart muscles become bulky and causes poor functioning of the heart. The research paper states that normally there is a history of sudden cardiac death in family or history of same diseases in other family members. Dr. Ratnjeet says, ' There are already many genes which are known to cause this condition and they can also be tested. However, the mutation we have reported - MYH7 gene - has been found out for first time.' Dr. Ratnjeet said that in future this gene can also be tested in suspected patients. He said that genetic testing in larger families is recommended, since the classification of the variant can change based on segregation analysis. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy disease can lead to sudden cardiac death or arrest on excessive exertion and sometimes dehydration. It is one of the most common causes of unexplained death in athletes or aerobic exercise enthusiasts. It is noteworthy that in the last one to two years, the number of such deaths has increased continuously in India in which teenagers to youngsters as well as elders were dying due to sudden collapse. There have also been reports of some small children dying in such incidents...////...
