New Delhi, Mar 7 (Reporter) India said today it is working closely with the US government to complete the necessary formalities to allow for the extradition to India of 26/11 Mumbai attack accused, Tahawwur Rana.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a briefing:
“You would have seen President Trump’s comments regarding the extradition of Rana. The India-US Joint Statement also reflects this sentiment.
“We are working closely with the US Government to complete the necessary formalities to allow for his extradition to India.”
His comments come as the US Supreme Court rejected the plea of Rana, seeking a stay on his extradition to India.
A Pakistan origin Canadian national, Tahawwur Rana, had approached the United States Supreme
Court seeking an emergency stay on his extradition to India. In his application, Rana argued that he would not survive long enough to be tried in India due to various reasons.
Rana, through an appeal, stated, "If a stay is not entered, there will be no review at all, and the US courts will lose jurisdiction, and the petitioner will soon be dead."
He claimed that if extradited to India, the likelihood is very high that he will be subjected to torture as he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin.
In February, US President Donald Trump had announced the extradition of Tahawwur Rana to India and said he would face justice.
Addressing a joint press conference with PM Modi at the White House, the US President said:
“Today I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters, and one of the very evil people of the world, having to do with the horrific 26/11/2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, to face justice in India. So, he’s going back to India to face justice.”
PM Modi, in his speech, had thanked President Trump for deciding to hand over “the culprit who committed the killings in India in 2008, to India”.
“Now Indian courts will take appropriate action,” the PM said.
In January, the US Supreme Court had cleared the extradition of Rana to India.
Rana was close to Pakistani American terrorist David Headley, who had recced the sites in Mumbai for the attack.
He faces charges for his role in the Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed. He is currently lodged in a jail in Los Angeles...////...
