Sylhet, Apr 23 (Reporter) Zimbabwe won the first Test against Bangladesh by three wickets in a dramatic finish at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday.
Wesley Madhevere reverse-swept a boundary to get the winning runs off Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who had given Bangladesh an unlikely chance of winning with his second five-wicket haul of the match.
The visitors looked set for a comfortable victory when they had raced to 95 in the 21st over without losing any wicket, chasing a modest target of 174. However, Miraz's five-for with Taijul Islam's brace gave Bangladfesh a fighting chance in fading light.
Miraz had triggered a collapse in the Zimbabwe innings by breaking the opening stand with the wicket of Ben Curran. That brought a mini-collapse as Zimbabwe lost three more wickets within 33 runs, threw wickets going to Miraz and the other one to Taijul Islam.
Miraz, who took five wickets in the first innings, then removed Nyasha Mayavo for one as Zimbabwe were 145 for six, still needing 29 runs to win with only the tail-enders to follow, the Daily Star reported.
Craig Ervine and Wesley Madhevere were in the middle when rain arrived.
Brian Bennett and Ben Curran gave Zimbabwe a solid start in their chase of 174-run target for victory against Bangladesh.
The visitors reached 117 for two in 28 overs at Tea, needing a further 57 runs for victory after Bangladesh were bowled out for 255 in their second innings earlier in the day.
Bennett was batting on 52 with Sean Williams on 0 as the visitors looked to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Ben Curran (44) and Nick Welch (10) were the two batters to get out.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam got one wicket each.
Earlier, Jaker Ali scored his fourth half-century in his eighth Test innings but Bangladesh were bowled out for 255 runs in their second innings, giving Zimbabwe a 174-run target to win the first Test in Sylhet on Wednesday.
The Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter was the only one willing to show some fight on the fourth day of the Test match as wickets kept falling around him, starting with a second-ball dismissal of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto after play had started an hour-and-15-minutes-later than schedule following overnight rain.
Shanto, batting on 60 overnight, was caught at deep third man off Blessing Muzarabani without adding to his 60-run tally. Muzarabani soon got rid off Mehedi Hasan Miraz (11) for his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Taijul Islam (1) followed soon, offering a feather edge behind off Richard Ngrava as Bangladesh were reduced to 213 for seven after starting the day at 194 for four.
A 35-run partnership between Hasan Mahmud and Jaker followed but Hasan's injudicious shot off Wellington Masakadza saw his demise for 12 before Khaled Ahmed was dismissed the next ball.
Jaker, already past half-century, hit a six off the next over from Ngrava before trying to apply the against Muzarabani. This time, he only managed to sky the ball for an easy catch to the fielder.
While Jaker was dismissed for 58, Muzarabani, with his six wickets for 72 runs, became the joint fastest Zimbabwean to reach 50 Test wickets...////...
