Srinagar, April 29 (Reporter) Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami on Monday threatened to approach the court if the elections to the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat are not held on schedule.
“In my opinion it would be injustice if the election in Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat was deferred,” Tarigami told media persons in Srinagar on Monday.
Tarigami was referring to demand made by some parties who approached the Election Commission of India seeking postponement of elections on account of difficulties in campaigning due to the closure of the Mughal Road.
The poll panel sought a report from the J&K authorities on the weather and accessibility related constraints which they have already submitted.
The EC is likely to take a decision on the deferment in a day or two.
Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency is scheduled to go to polls in the third phase on May 7.
Tarigami said several parties have already written to the EC not to defer the elections. “If needed we will not hesitate to approach the court if the elections are deferred to the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat,” he said.
The CPIM leader said roads often get closed for two or three days due to bad weather which is not a new thing.
“There are so many areas in the country where roads are not accessible and elections are being held there as well,” he said.
He said there are other routes which are connecting the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency.
“In my opinion the Bharatiya Janata Party after seeing the voter turnout and the people’s mandate in Jammu not according to their expectations, are making one or the other excuses to postpone the elections in Anantnag-Rajouri seat,” he said.
He said there is legitimate concern of the people of Anantnag-Rajouri to exercise their franchise on time; and the BJP wants to change that too.
“We appeal to EC not to defer the elections and if it does not happen we fear the credibility of EC will be at stake,” he said.
Tarigami said after the first two phases of the Lok Sabha elections, there have been no wave visible in favour of the BJP, who have been claiming to win more than 370 or 400 seats.
“Their narrative appears to have been punctured and leaders at the Centre are trying to spread false information in frustration which is against the law and can cause a wedge in the integrity of the country,” he said.
