Chennai, Oct 24 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday wrote to
External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr.S.Jaishankar to take diplomatic steps for securing
the release of all arrested fishermen from the State and their fishing boats from Sri
Lankan custody.
In a Demi-official to Dr.Jaishankar, copies of which were released to the press here,
he said the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 16 Indian fishermen hailing from
Rameswaram along with their two mechanised fishing boats on Wednesday.
"As I have pointed out earlier, such incidents are on the rise and cause
considerable distress to the fishermen's families", he said, adding, they
continue unabated and are hampering the livelihoods of coastal families.
"Therefore, I request you to initiate necessary diplomatic efforts to
prevail upon the Sri Lankan Government to prevent the arrest of fishermen
and to ensure the expeditious release of all the 128 fishermen from Tamil
Nadu and the 199 fishing boats that are still under the custody of the Sri
Lankan authorities.", Mr Stalin said.
"Further, I hope the proposed deliberations of the Joint Working Group
will bring us closer to a lasting solution to this festering issue", he added...////...
