Stalin writes to EAM on release of fishermen from SL custody

Chennai, Oct 24 (Reporter) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday wrote to External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr.S.Jaishankar to take diplomatic steps for securing the release of all arrested fishermen from the State and their fishing boats from Sri Lankan custody. In a Demi-official to Dr.Jaishankar, copies of which were released to the press here, he said the Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 16 Indian fishermen hailing from Rameswaram along with their two mechanised fishing boats on Wednesday. "As I have pointed out earlier, such incidents are on the rise and cause considerable distress to the fishermen's families", he said, adding, they continue unabated and are hampering the livelihoods of coastal families. "Therefore, I request you to initiate necessary diplomatic efforts to prevail upon the Sri Lankan Government to prevent the arrest of fishermen and to ensure the expeditious release of all the 128 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and the 199 fishing boats that are still under the custody of the Sri Lankan authorities.", Mr Stalin said.
