Bengaluru, Oct 24 (Reporter) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday approached the Karnataka High Court, contesting a special court’s decision to grant bail to former Karnataka minister B Nagendra, arrested on July 12 in connection with the Valmiki Corporation scam.
Justice M Nagaprasanna issued notice to Nagendra, instructing him to submit a reply by November 15, the next scheduled hearing. The ED's legal representative, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, contended that the special court's ruling had been based on "many erroneous" assumptions.
While the ED requested immediate intervention, the High Court stated it would wait to hear both sides before considering any interim orders.
Earlier, on October 14, a Bengaluru special court granted bail to Nagendra, who has been accused of misusing funds from the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. The ED has identified him as the key orchestrator of the scam, alleging that approximately ₹90 crore was illegally transferred to unauthorised accounts.
Despite the ED's chargesheet filed this month, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Karnataka government to investigate the scam, did not name Nagendra in its First Information Report (FIR).
The alleged scam surfaced in May this year following the suicide of Chandrashekhar, the accounts superintendent of the Valmiki Corporation. In a note, Chandrashekhar accused officials of embezzling welfare funds, prompting both the SIT and the ED to launch separate investigations.
The court will next hear the matter on November 15...////...
