Shimla, Jan 6 (Reporter) Himachal Pradesh experienced a mix of weather on Monday, with light snowfall confined to the Lahaul-Spiti region and minimal rainfall reported in lower areas.
The met office initially predicted widespread precipitation across the state but later revised its outlook to isolated locations, reflecting the challenges of forecasting in the region's complex terrain.
In Lahaul-Spiti, fresh snowfall caused significant disruptions, closing several key routes. The Darcha to Shinkunla and Darcha to Sarchu (NH-003) routes remain shut and are expected to reopen only in the summer of 2025. The Koksar to Manali via Rohtang Pass and Koksar to Lossar via Kunzum Top routes are also closed due to heavy snow accumulation.
Despite these closures, a few routes remain operational, albeit under challenging conditions. Roads like Keylong to Darcha, Keylong to the Atal Tunnel, and Lossar to Kaza (NH-505) are open but restricted to 4x4 vehicles or 4x2 vehicles equipped with snow chains due to slippery surfaces and black ice. Meanwhile, the Tandi to Udaipur and Udaipur to Tindi routes are open, with weather conditions ranging from cloudy to partly cloudy.
Keylong recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature at -2.5°C, while Shimla reported a minimum of 5.0°C, 2.1°C above normal.
Precipitation remained sparse, with Una recording just 1 mm of rain. Hansa in Lahaul-Spiti received 5 cm of snow, while Keylong and Gondla reported trace amounts.
Dense fog in Bilaspur reduced visibility to just 50 metres, while Sundernagar and Mandi experienced shallow fog, with visibility dropping to 800 meters.
Despite isolated snowfall, the state recorded higher-than-average temperatures. The overall minimum temperatures were 3.3°C above normal, underscoring warmer-than-usual conditions this winter...////...
