Shimla , Feb 1(Reporter) The major spell of rain and snowfall continues in major tourist resorts in the state for a second day today as all the high reaches are draped with a thick blanket of snowfall, plummeting the mercury in the state.
Tourist resort Manali had 15 cm of snowfall on Wednesday. Narkanda, Dalhousie, and Kufri have also had snowfall since last night. According to the Met Office, Manali received 15 cm of snowfall, Narkanda 20 cm, Kufri 3, Keylong 13 mm, Kukumseri 18 cm, Kalpa 5 cm, and Bharmour 13 cm.
Chirgaon in Rohru got the heaviest: 75cm, Kothi 50 cm, snowfall, Khadrala 16 cm. Sangla-12.2 cm, Koksar in Lahaul Spiti 16.2 cm, Sumdho 4.8 cm, and Shilaroo in Shimla-15 cm.
Rohru in Shimla had 40 mm of rain, Kangra at 23.6 mm, Bhuntar at 33, Palampur at 24, Shimla at 16 mm, and Jubberhati airport at 12 mm.
The dark clouds were hovering over the sky in the capital town of Shimla, and nearby areas witnessed windstorms and lightening last night. The town didn't see its first snowfall in December and January, but the Indian Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate snowfall today and at the end of next week.
All places in the state have light to moderate rain, and a light to moderate spell of snowfall plummeted the mercury in the high reaches.
Vehicular traffic was closed on Manali-Keylong National Highway No. 3, and an advisory of black ice was sounded. Kullu traffic police had to brave the cold weather yesterday as many locals and tourists were stranded on the north and south portals of Rohtang Tunnel.
Lahaul Spiti district got moderate to heavy snowfall, including Keylong, Udaipur, Tandi, and Kaza, on Wednesday.
The gateways of Lahaul Spiti district, 13050-foot-high Rohtang Pass, Lady of Keylong, Seven Sisters Hills, and Kunzum Pass had one to two feet of snowfall, freezing the entire high reaches under a blanket of snowfall.
Jalori Jot of Kullu, Dhauladhar range, Bara Bhangal of Kangra, Shikari Devi and Seraj of Mandi, Kinner Kailash, Chitkul, and Sangla, Recongpeo of Kinnaur, Manimesh Pangi, Bharmour of Chamba, Rohru, Kharpathar, Hatu, Khadrala, Chanshal Pass, and Dodrakawar of Shimla got a moderate spell of snowfall, which is continuing.
All the districts in the state got widespread rain, thunderstorms, and dark clouds hovering over the sky. IMD also predicted the possibility of snowfall in Shimla, Chail, Mashobra, Giripar of Sirmaur, and Kasouli of Solan district.
Wet weather conditions partly paralysed normal life due to the closing down of about 241 roads, six national highways, and disrupting power supply in about 677 distribution transmission regions (DTR) due to thunder storms and snowfall, but people and farmers are happy with the inclement weather conditions as they ended prolonged dry spells, which may help good yields of apple, off-season vegetables, and Rabi crops.
Employees and students are facing hardships and brave inclement weather to go to their offices and educational institutions, and attendance was poor in institutions due to rain and snowfall.
Vehicular traffic was partly affected on Hindustan Tibet National Highway No. 5 between Kufri and Narkanda due to the mounting snow and sleet on the roads. 139 roads are affected in Kullu, 38 in Chamba, 25 in Kinnaur, 14 in Mandu, and Shimla 13 districts. Similarly, State Electricity Board 237 DTR is out of order in Chamba, 151 in Kullu, 132 in Lahaul Spiti, 77 in Mandi, and 72 in Una.
IMD forecast light to moderate rainfall in the lower hills, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty wind likely to continue for the next 2 to 3 hours at many places.
