New Delhi, May 30 (Reporter) The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that the situation in Bishkek is normal, days after the mob violence directed at foreign students in the Kyrgyz capital, and added that the Indian embassy is assisting Indian students.
"The situation in Bishkek remains normal. Over two weeks ago, there were some incidents involving foreign students, not Indians, which caused concern among our students," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the weekly media briefing.
There are about 17,000 Indian students studying in the Kyrgyz Republic with most of them in Bishkek.
He said the Indian embassy immediately got in touch with Indian students to ensure their safety and welfare and also opened 24x7 helplines to assist them.
“We also took up the matter with the local authorities and the university administration, so that the well-being and safety of our students is taken care of,” he said.
He pointed out that this is the examination time there and after the exams are over the summer vacation will fall during which many Indian students will be returning home.
"There are direct flights between Delhi and Bishkek twice a week, and also flights via Almaty, for students who wish to travel home. Our Embassy remains committed to assisting our students in every which way," he said.
The mob violence against foreign students was triggered following an alleged fight between locals and some foreign students at a hostel on May 13. People started gathering the day after to show dissatisfaction with what they said was the lax treatment of foreigners involved in the fight...////...
