Sikkim gears up to greet PM on 50th statehood day on May 29

Gangtok, May 27 (Reporter) This tiny eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim is gearing up to greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to attend the 50th (golden jubilee) Statehood Day on May 29, official sources said. Sikkim's Statehood Day is usually celebrated on May 16, the day when the erstwhile Chogyal kingdom merged with the Indian Union in 1975 by a referendum and became the 22nd state of India with a special provision of 271-F stipulating the preservation of the ethnic Sikimese culture, tradition and reservation of the Lepcha and Bhutia communities in the state's 32-member Assembly. Late Kazi Lhendup Dorjee (October 11, 1904-July 28, 2007) was the chief architect of Sikkim merger and became the first chief minister when Sikkim became a part of the Indian Union. He was the first Prime Minister of Sikkim from 1974 to 1975. He also served as the Executive Council of Sikkim from 1967 to 1970. He was a member of INC after 1975 and Sikkim National Congress before 1975. Sikkim became a part of India when late Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister. Modi was scheduled to arrive in Gangtok on May 16 to mark the 50th year of statehood day, but the visit was postponed to May 29 after the April 22 Pahalgam massacre and following New Delhi's Operation Sindoor against the Pakistan backed terrorist outfits...////...
