SC suggests Badal, Majithia express remorse to Justice Ranjit Singh

New Delhi, Nov 19 (Reporter) The Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested former Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and ex-Punjab MLA Bikram Singh Majithia consider expressing remorse to Justice (Retd) Ranjit Singh to amicably resolve their dispute. Justice Singh had approached the Apex Court, alleging defamatory statements made by Badal and Majithia brought disrepute to the Commission he headed, which investigated sacrilege incidents in Punjab. A bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Aravind Kumar encouraged the parties to find common ground. The bench asked Senior Advocate Puneet Bali, representing the respondents, to seek instructions on expressing regret, while Senior Advocate Nidhesh Gupta, representing Justice Singh, was asked to assess whether an apology would be acceptable. Justice Sundresh remarked, “You are a former Deputy Chief Minister, and he is a former judge. Expressing regret would elevate you to a higher pedestal.” Justice Kumar also showed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond personal grievances. The case stems from Justice Singh's criminal complaint under Section 10A of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, filed in response to allegations by Badal and Majithia in 2018. They accused Justice Singh of fabricating evidence in the Commission’s report, which implicated Dera Sacha Sauda followers and SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal in sacrilege incidents and police actions. The complaint was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2019 on grounds of maintainability, as Justice Singh no longer chaired the Commission.
