Rio de Janeiro/New Delhi, Nov 19 (Reporter) Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the G20 Summit that India is the first country of the bloc to have fulfilled its commitments under the Paris Agreement ahead of time.
Participating in the Third Session of the G20 Brazil Summit on ‘Sustainable Development and Energy Transition’, in Rio, the PM said his government has made green transition a peoples’ movement.
Notching up the government’s achievements, PM Modi said that, “Over the last decade we have built homes for more than 40 million families. Over the last five years, clean water supply has been ensured for 120 million homes.
“Our efforts are based on traditional Indian thought which is both progressive and balanced.”
“Approximately 10 million families have registered for the world’s biggest solar roof top programme.”
He said that in order to promote a sustainable lifestyle at a global level, India has launched Mission LIFE or Lifestyle for the Environment. India has also launched the International Solar Alliance, and over 100 countries have joined it.
He said that “Under the ‘Plant4Mother’ campaign, we have planted about a billion trees in India this year.”
He also called for developed countries to fulfil their commitments to provide technology and finance, in a timely manner.
PM Modi said that India is sharing its experiences with all friendly countries, in particular with the Global South.
“During the New Delhi G20 Summit we had adopted the Varanasi Action Plan to accelerate achievement of the SDGs. Under Brazil’s presidency, priority has been accorded to the implementation of these goals, and we welcome this.”
