SC dismisses plea against ECI for asking Aadhaar numbers to enroll new voters

New Delhi, Feb 9 (Reporter) The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition seeking contempt action against the Election Commission of India (ECI) for allegedly not changing its forms and asking for Aadhaar numbers to enroll new voters. The petition filed by one G. Niranjan said that though the ECI had stated that the Aadhaar number was not mandatory to enroll new voters, the forms have still not been changed. The ECI in its forms still asks for Aadhar numbers in the updation of entries in the electoral roll, stated the petitioner. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice Manoj Mishra, and Justice Satish Chandra refused to initiate contempt action, noting that the ECI has stated that it is looking into the matter. In September last year, the Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that submission of the Aadhar number was not mandatory for the process of deletion and updation of entries in the electoral roll. Senior Counsel Sukumar Pattjoshi, appearing on behalf of the ECI, told the Top Court that nearly 66,23,00,000 Aadhar numbers had already been uploaded in the process of finalizing electoral rolls and they are looking into issuing appropriate clarifications for the same.
