Shillong, May 20 (Reporter) Rifiness Warjri, a 20-year-old NCC cadet, has made history by becoming the third woman from Meghalaya to conquer the 8,848 ft Mount Everest. Warjri, a student of St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, and cadet of 61 Meghalaya Girls Battalion NCC, reached the summit of Mount Everest at 4:45 AM on May 18, 2025. She was the sole representative from the entire North Eastern Region to be selected for the 38-member Mount Everest expedition. “For the people of the North East, Warjri’s accomplishments are more than personal victories; they serve as a beacon of hope. In a region where opportunity is often hindered by geographic challenges, her achievement shines brightly, encouraging others to chase their dreams, no matter how distant,” an NCC official said. The distinction of scaling the world’s highest peak has now been achieved by a fourth individual from Meghalaya. Gary Jarman Lamare, a Discovery Channel photographer, made history as the first Meghalayan to summit Everest in 2012, followed by Wansuk Myrthong, an armed Meghalaya police constable, in 2013 and Dolyne Kharbhih, a former NCC cadet hailing from the Ri Bhoi district, in 2016. Before successfully summiting Mount Everest, Warjri had scaled Mount Abi Gamin (7,355 meters) in Uttarakhand in August 2024—an unforgiving peak that tested her endurance and resolve. Warjri, the third of five children, acknowledges her parents, Shlurbor Kharmyndai and Diamondsea Warjri, for providing the unwavering support that has been crucial to her success. Warjri’s passion for mountaineering ignited during her school years at Auxilium Convent Shillong through her involvement with the NCC. Alongside her mountaineering ambitions, Warjri is also an accomplished Wushu martial artist and kickboxer, having represented her state in competitive events. “These experiences have helped her develop both physically and mentally, leading her to the successful summiting of the world's highest peak – The Mount Everest,” an NCC official said...////...
