Bengal: Six people died in Nadia road accident

Kolkata, May 20 (Reporter) Six people died and several others were injured in a devastating road accident on Tuesday morning in West Bengal's Nadia district when a speeding tourist bus rammed into a Maruti car coming from the opposite direction. The collision occurred near Kathalia in Mahishbathan when a bus travelling from Nazirpur to Digha collided head-on with a Maruti van coming from the opposite direction. Initially, five passengers in the van, including three women and two men, died on the spot. The van driver, Suman Sheikh, who was critically injured, was rushed to Karimpur Rural Hospital and later transferred to Tehatta Sub-divisional Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll to six. Police have identified the deceased as Sanjay Sarkar and his mother, Anima Sarkar, residents of Goas village under Thanapara police station limits. Other victims include Mamata Sarkar and Sulekha Sarkar from Raninagar in Murshidabad's Sagarpara police station area. The impact of the crash left the van mangled beyond recognition, and the front portion of the air-conditioned bus was also severely damaged. While all occupants of the van perished, several bus passengers sustained injuries and were admitted to Karimpur Rural Hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. The bus driver fled the scene and remains untraceable. Police are continuing their search for him.
