Una (HP), Apr 14 (Reporter) Former Himachal Pradesh Minister and senior BJP leader Virendra Kanwar has reportedly received a life-threatening call demanding ransom from an unknown person, prompting swift police action.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security of political leaders in the region.
According to Kanwar, he received a threatening phone call from an individual who identified himself as "Dharmendra" from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
The caller demanded a ransom between ₹20 to ₹25 lakh and threatened to kidnap and kill Kanwar if the amount was not paid. Disturbed by the threat, Kanwar immediately reported the matter to Superintendent of Police, Una, Rakesh Singh.
Following the complaint, the Una Police registered a case and launched an investigation. The cyber cell and technical team have been deployed to trace the caller through call recordings, mobile phone tracing, and cyber surveillance. In a twist, while the caller introduced himself as Dharmendra, his number displayed the name “Irfan Khan” on the Truecaller application, indicating an attempt to conceal his real identity.
Superintendent of Police Rakesh Singh confirmed the registration of the case and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to identify and apprehend the accused at the earliest.
Virendra Kanwar served as the Minister for Rural Development and Animal Husbandry during the tenure of the Jai Ram Thakur-led BJP government in Himachal Pradesh. However, he lost the 2022 Assembly election and was not given a party ticket for the 2024 by-elections, which led to his temporary retreat from active politics.
The incident has shocked the political fraternity and residents of Una district, leading to calls for enhanced security arrangements for former public representatives...////...
