PM Modi, T&T PM agree to strengthen India-CARICOM ties; several agreements inked

Port of Spain/New Delhi, July 4 (Reporter) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago’s strong support and solidarity extended to the people of India in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. During his talks with T&T Prime Minister Kamala Persad-Bissessar, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. They agreed to work together for greater solidarity among the countries of the Global South and to strengthen India-CARICOM partnership, a statement said. Following the talks, six MOUs in the fields of pharmacopoeia, Quick Impact Projects, culture, sports, diplomatic training and ICCR chairs for Hindi and Indian studies were exchanged. Several announcements to foster bilateral ties, including the offer of OCI card to the sixth generation of the people of Indian origin in T&T were made. The two leaders met for talks at Red House in Port of Spain. He congratulated Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on taking over office the second time after her victory in recent elections. He thanked her for an exceptional welcome. The two leaders held discussions on a wide-range of areas of potential collaboration including agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, digital transformation, UPI, capacity building, culture, sports and people-to-people ties. Development cooperation is an important pillar of India-Trinidad & Tobago partnership. Prime Minister Bissesar noted that Prime Minister Modi’s landmark visit to Trinidad & Tobago will reinvigorate the deep-rooted bilateral ties between the two countries. Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They called upon greater cooperation to deal with contemporary challenges such climate change, disaster management, and cyber security. Prime Minister Modi invited Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to pay a visit to India, which she accepted. The landmark visit of PM Modi to Trinidad & Tobago has given a boost to the special ties between the countries. The two sides inked six MoUs/Agreement:i. MoU on Indian Pharmacopoeia ii. Agreement on Indian Grant Assistance for Implementation of Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) iii. Programme of Cultural Exchanges for the period 2025-2028 iv. MoU on Cooperation in Sports v. MoU on Co-operation in Diplomatic Training vi. MoU on the re-establishment of two ICCR Chairs of Hindi and Indian Studies at the University of West Indies (UWI), Trinidad and Tobago. Announcements made by PM Modi: i. Extension of OCI card facility upto sixth generation of Indian Diaspora members in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T): Earlier, this facility was available upto fourth generation of Indian Diaspora members in T&T ii. Gifting of 2,000 laptops to school students in T&T iii. Formal handing over of agro-processing machinery (USD 1 million) to NAMDEVCO iv. Holding of Artificial Limb Fitment Camp (poster-launch) in T&T for 50 days for 800 people v. Under ‘Heal in India’ programme specialized medical treatment will be offered in India vi. Gift of twenty (20) Hemodialysis Units and two (02) Sea ambulances to T&T to assist in the provision of healthcare vii. Solarisation of the headquarters of T&T’s Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs by providing rooftop photovoltaic solar panels viii. Celebration of Geeta Mahotsav at Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation in Port of Spain, coinciding with the Geeta Mahotsav celebrations in India ix. Training of Pandits of T&T and Caribbean region in IndiaC) Other Outcomes: T&T announced that it is joining India’s global initiatives: the Coalition of Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA). They also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen global fight against terrorism. “PM reiterated India's commitment to India- CARICOM ties and to furthering the voice of the Global South.” The CARICOM, or Caribbean Community and Common Market, is a regional organization of 20 Caribbean nations: 15 full members and five associate members. It was established on July 4, 1973, and is headquartered in Georgetown, Guyana. Its objectives are to promote economic integration and cooperation among member states, coordinate foreign policy, support human and social development and enhance regional security. It operates the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) to allow free movement of goods, services, people, and capital. It is recognized as a UN observer, giving it a voice in global affairs.
