NHRC seeks report over alleged assault on infant in Kolkata

New Delhi, Dec 11 (Reporter) Taking Suo motu cognisance of a media report that a seven-month-old baby was allegedly abducted from a footpath and sexually assaulted by miscreants in Kolkata, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to West Bengal's Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police on Wednesday. In the notice, the NHRC asked the authorities to submit a detailed report within two weeks. “The report is expected to include the status of the FIR, the health of the baby victim, and compensation, if any provided to the aggrieved family,” the NHRC said. According to the Commission, the girl is reportedly the daughter of a homeless couple. She was discovered lying on the pavement when some people spotted her and alerted the police on November 30. The Commission noted that the contents of the news report, if accurate, raise serious concerns about the violation of the infant's human rights. The incident indicates sheer lawlessness. Antisocial elements roam freely and indulge in any unlawful activity without fear.
