Srinagar, Aug 28 (Reporter) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday criticized the alliance between National Conference (NC) and Congress for the upcoming Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
She stated that their partnership is solely driven by a "desire for power".
Mufti emphasized that whenever PDP formed alliances with Congress or BJP in the past, it was based on a clear agenda for Jammu and Kashmir.
In contrast, she claimed that NC-Congress alliances are solely focused on gaining power.
The PDP President's comments come amidst growing differences within the Opposition INDI alliance, of which her party is a constituent.
Mufti highlighted the NC-Congress alliance's controversial history, citing the hanging of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru during their tenure. She also referred to the alleged election rigging in 1987.
“In 1987, they stole the election results and we are still facing the result of that,” she told reporters at the party headquarters.
Mufti reaffirmed PDP's commitment to its agenda, stating that the party prioritizes its core values over seat sharing. She noted that PDP has always contested elections independently in Jammu and Kashmir, relying on public support.
"Ever since our party was formed, we have fought alone and with the support of the people. We have fought to end the sufferings of the people here," the former Chief Minister said, adding the basic agenda of the PDP is to bring peace with dignity.
The PDP Chief reiterated that she would not contest the upcoming polls, citing the diminished power of the Assembly, which she likened to a municipality.
She questioned the purpose of holding public office when even basic decisions require approval from the Lt Governor.
Mufti emphasized her past achievements as a powerful Chief Minister, including withdrawing FIRs against 12,000 individuals and getting a ceasefire implemented.
Mehbooba said NC Vice President Omar Abdullah had himself said that he will have to visit the Lt Governor for transfer of a peon.
“ ....I have been such a powerful CM who run the government with the BJP at the Centre, withdrew FIRs of 12,000 persons, wrote letters to separatists, and could get a ceasefire implemented. Can you do it now? I was a powerful CM, the Assembly was powerful, now the Assembly has been reduced to a municipality. We cannot pass a law.. ," Mufti said...////...
