Jammu, Mar 6 (Reporter) Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat on Thursday said that terrorism and drug peddling are equally grave threats to the society. "I would rate the fight against drugs and fight against terrorism on an equal pedestal," the DGP emphasized the need for a collective societal effort to curb the rising menace of drug abuse. Speaking at Thana Diwas in Jammu, the DGP highlighted that drug trafficking is an organized crime network, with narcotics being smuggled from western regions through the Pakistan border, allegedly controlled by ISI. As a part of the public outreach programme, "Thana Diwas", an initiative by the J&K government aimed to bridge the gap between the police and the public . It also aimed at addressing the grievances of common masses, promoting transparency and accountability in policing, fostering community policing and public cooperation. The Director General said that ‘Thana Diwas’ is an initiative taken under the directions of Lt Governor of J&K Manoj Sinha to extend Police services to the people of J&K. Thana Diwas is a medium to come close to the general people, he said, adding, that since its launch it has been organized in all the districts of J&K continuously, and the same continues this this year with more enthusiasm. DGP said "Terrorism and drug peddling are equally dangerous". He emphasized the need for a collective societal effort to curb the rising menace of drug abuse. "Police and law enforcement agencies are actively addressing the issue, but society must step forward. Even school children, in uniform, are found selling small bags of drugs and other contraband substances. There is a lack of supervision and control from parents and society at large," he remarked. He said that J&K Police is making all efforts to eradicate the drug menace as well to aware people, especially youth against the ill effects of drugs. “We have to take action against all those involved in drug peddling and its trade and the Narcotics problem is not a lesser challenge than terrorism, he added. The state police chief said that we have to stand and work mutually to stop this trend too for better tomorrow. Addressing deployment within the police force, he said that those who perform well will be rewarded with appropriate postings. He assured that officers who work for the country will get their desired postings immediately. Adding that systemic changes take time, he remarked, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” signaling a long-term approach to improving the force’s functioning in Jammu and Kashmir. On women’s safety, he warned that if an Investigating Officer (IO) fails to file a chargesheet within 60 days, strict action will be taken. Additionally, retired bureaucrats, legal luminaries, trade, transport, and business leaders, as well as other respected members of society, actively participated in the event, reinforcing the growing trust between the police and the public. With J&K Police’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism, curbing drug trafficking, and strengthening community relations, Thana Diwas continues to serve as a vital platform for public engagement and law enforcement cooperation...////...
