Mumbai, July 7 (Reporter) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended rainfall alerts across coastal Maharashtra through July 9, maintaining a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts with forecasts of heavy showers and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph in isolated areas. Concurrently, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts remain under orange alert for very heavy downpours. The weather system, driven by cyclonic circulation over Madhya Pradesh, will bring thunderstorms and strong winds to Konkan and ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra. Current conditions show Mumbai experiencing light rain at 29°C with 80% humidity and 31 km/h winds as of 9 AM July 7. Maximum temperatures will hover near 31°C with minimums at 25°C throughout the alert period. Seasonal rainfall totals reached 684 mm at Colaba and 649 mm at Santacruz observatories—26.81% of Mumbai's annual average and significantly higher than last year's 558 mm and 443 mm, respectively, on the same date. This precipitation has substantially replenished water reserves, with the seven lakes supplying Mumbai now at 59.56% capacity compared to 10.88% in 2024. Current reservoir levels include Upper Vaitarna (71.50%), Modak Sagar (75.46%), Tansa (60.43%), Middle Vaitarna (71.66%), Bhatsa (50.19%), Vihar (45.62%), and Tulsi (44.43%). The week ahead predicts consistent light rain with isolated thunderstorms possible Monday, maintaining temperatures between 27-29°C. Coastal warnings remain critical, with 40-50 kmph winds (gusting to 60 kmph) forecast along Maharashtra's coastline through July 10-11.
