Meghalaya cabinet approves Witness Protection Scheme, 2025

Shillong, Apr 8 (Reporter) The Meghalaya Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025 to protect witnesses against imminent threats during investigations and trials. Under the new laws -Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) – there is a provision to have a witness protection scheme. “A system is to be created to protect witnesses, and based on that, we have approved the rules for the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025, and there are many details to it,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said. Under the scheme, Sangma said there will be a committee at every district level which would be headed by one of the district magistrates. “This committee would decide on the level of threat of a witness in a case. Based on the level of threat, the committee would decide the kind of protection the witness requires,“ the Chief Minister said.
