Shimla, May 13 (Reporter) The first fortnight of May in Himachal Pradesh has brought relief from the early summer heat, with cooler-than-normal temperatures and increased rainfall.
According to the Meteorological Department, the state recorded 18 per cent more rainfall than usual, with wet weather prevailing on seven to eight days.
The average rainfall recorded across the state from May 1 to 13 was 34.1 mm, compared to the normal of 28.9 mm. While this marked a generally wetter-than-usual start to May, rainfall distribution varied across regions.
Sirmaur district received the highest average rainfall at 75.9 mm, which is 291 per cent above normal, followed by Solan at 70.4 mm (216 per cent above normal), Bilaspur at 47.7 mm (208 per cent above normal), and Hamirpur at 47 mm (157 per cent above normal).
However, high-altitude tribal districts remained comparatively dry. Kinnaur received just 5.7 mm of rainfall, which is 81 per cent below normal, while Kullu recorded 21.3 mm (35 per cent below normal) and Lahaul & Spiti 17.5 mm (36 per cent below normal).
These figures indicate that central and lower hill districts witnessed excess rainfall, whereas the higher altitudes experienced a significant shortfall.
This disparity, especially in regions like Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, needs close monitoring for its potential impact on agriculture and water resources.
Tourist destinations in the state are currently enjoying ideal weather. Mercury levels have remained below normal in several places, contributing to pleasant hill conditions. On Tuesday, Manali recorded a low of 8.9°C, which is 2–3 degrees below average.
In the past 24 hours, light rain was reported from isolated places in mid and high hill districts. The IMD reported light rain and thunder in parts of Shimla, Chamba, Kullu, and Mandi.
With cooler temperatures and moderate rainfall, popular destinations like Shimla, Manali, and Dalhousie are offering ideal weather for tourists. However, authorities have advised caution in landslide-prone areas due to sporadic rain events...////...
