Maha rains damage swathes of orchards in Solapur, causing losses to farmers

Mumbai, May 28 (Reporter) Persistent heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction across Solapur district, severely impacting horticultural crops on 1,248 hectares spanning 128 villages. The district has recorded 206 mm of rainfall, resulting in rising river levels and flood-like conditions in several areas, officials said here on Wednesday. In many villages, rainwater inundated agricultural fields, leaving large ponds and damaging a variety of orchards, including banana, grape, papaya, custard apple, mango, chiku, and pomegranate. The extensive crop loss has left local farmers deeply concerned about their livelihoods. Boramani village in South Solapur taluka has been among the worst affected, receiving 210 mm of rainfall over the past two weeks. The village experienced severe flooding, with waterlogging in fields and the complete destruction of several orchards. One local farmer, Malinath Patne, reported a total loss of his five-acre orchard, estimating damages between Rs 20 and 25 lakh. Similar devastation has been reported from the Akalkot, Karmala, and Malsheris regions. In Barshi taluka, flooding of the Bhogavati river has disrupted connectivity between villages. In a related incident, an ST bus travelling from Barshi to Tuljapur became stranded in a railway tunnel while attempting to avoid the rising waters. Emergency Management Authority personnel responded swiftly, safely evacuating all passengers from the bus.
