Paris, Dec 16 (Reporter) French President Emmanuel Macron called an emergency meeting for Monday after a powerful cyclone, Chido, barreled through the French overseas territory of Mayotte, leaving a trail of destruction, media reported.
Macron will chair a crisis meeting on the situation in the Indian Ocean islands at the Ministry of the Interior at 6 p.m. (17:00 GMT), BFMTV reported.
Chido, the most powerful cyclone to hit Mayotte in nearly a century, battered the islands on Saturday. Mayotte Prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville said hundreds, if not thousands, of people were feared dead given the violence of the event.
Mayotte lies in the southwestern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Africa. It is France's poorest island and the poorest territory in the European Union, with a population of just over 300,000 spread over two main islands...////...
