Kolkata, May 26 (Reporter) Hitting an on-duty Kolkata Police officer by a commercial car driver at Kalighat and subsequent investigation led the city police to uncover a racket of how a Bangladeshi national turned an Indian citizen by procuring fake Indian identity cards in only Rs 15,000, officials said on Monday.
The arrested driver Azad Sheikh (41), actually a resident of Faridpur in Bangladesh, crossed over to India via North 24 Parganas in October, 2023. He became an Indian citizen after procuring Aadhaar and voter cards, a driving licence and also an Ayusman Bharat health card, which is not valid in West Bengal.
The police stumbled upon Sheikh's real identity following an investigation into an incident in which Sheikh's e-car hit a three-wheeler in which sub-inspector Susen Das was travelling at Kalighat on May 18. The official fell on the road and suffered multiple injuries, including a leg fracture. Subsequently, the car was seized and its driver, identified as Azad Sheikh, was arrested.
He was charged with rash and negligent driving and an attempt to commit culpable homicide. Police also confiscated his driving licence and the Aadhaar card. During the investigation, cops were surprised to find that both the documents provided by the driver were fake.
The accused, during interrogation, reportedly confessed that he had infiltrated into India from Bangladesh multiple times since October 2023. Police said it was revealed that Azad originally hails from Boalmari area of Faridpur district in Bangladesh.
He allegedly procured fake Indian documents at a cost of Rs 15,000.
Police have registered another case against Azad under the relevant sections of the BNS and Foreigners Act.
Further investigation led the Kolkata Police to arrest one Zafar Ali of Nazat, also from North 24 Parganas, who provided all fake documents to Sheikh.
Sources said Azad befriended Zafar Ali Sheikh in the Nazat police station area. Zafar helped Sheikh get fake Aadhaar card. Police on Saturday arrested Zafar for his involvement in the forgery of identity documents...////...
