Bengaluru, May 26 (Reporter) Liquor sellers across Karnataka have decided to go on a statewide bandh from May 29 to protest against the continuous increase in liquor prices and the steep hike in license fees by the Congress government.
The Liquor Sellers Association, after holding consultations, expressed strong dissatisfaction over the repeated liquor price hikes and doubling of license fees since the Congress took office. Liquor sales have reportedly dropped significantly due to these increases.
The association has called for a shutdown of bars, restaurants, and wine shops starting May 29 if their demands are not met. A crucial meeting between the association and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled for May 26. If the talks fail to produce a favourable outcome, the bandh will proceed.
Under the new policy, license fees for different categories have seen sharp rises. For example, the license fee for CL9 bars and restaurants has increased from Rs 8.62 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, with the total including cess reaching Rs 17.25 lakh.
Similarly, CL6A star hotel licenses have risen from Rs 9.75 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, totaling Rs 23 lakh including cess. The CL7 boarding and lodging license fee has also jumped from Rs 9.75 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, amounting to Rs 19.55 lakh including cess.
The Chief Minister has assured that he will meet the sellers to discuss their concerns. Meanwhile, liquor consumers have appealed to the government to reconsider the price and fee hikes, citing adverse effects on sales and businesses.
The government’s response and the outcome of the upcoming meeting are awaited...////...
