Sagar Island, Jan 6 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that some of the fishermen detained in Bangladesh were beaten up with lathis during detention. The Chief Minister made the allegation while handing over Rs 10,000 relief to each of the 95 fishermen, released by the Bangladesh authorities on Sunday after being arrested for crossing the Indian maritime limit. The 95 fishermen were released after being detained for about 2 and a half months by the Bangladesh authorities. " I have seen that some of the Indian fishermen were limping while walking due to injury they sustained during detention," Banerjee claimed. She said some of the fishermen were beaten up and asked the South 24 Parganas district authorities to ensure proper treatment for them. After handing over Rs 10,000 each to 95 fishermen, the Chief Minister said the detained fishermen were tied up with ropes and were beaten up in Bangladesh. She told the fishermen to be careful in the future while out fishing and not to cross the Indian maritime limit. She asked Kakdwip MLA Mantu Pakira and the South District DM to provide proper treatment to the injured fishermen at government expense. " We treat them nicely and many of them were medically treated for sickness so that our country's reputation was not maligned," the West Bengal CM said. " We want the friendship between the two nations to remain intact," she added. In a broad and mutual reciprocation between India and Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Coast Guard on Sunday handed over 95 Indian fishermen to the Indian Coast Guard and in return, the ICG handed over 90 Bangladeshi fishermen to the BCG. The repatriation happened in the presence of West Bengal Sundarbans Development Minister Bankim Hazra and senior officials of the ICG and BCG in South 24 Parganas.
