Ahmedabad, May 25 (Reporter) Newly appointed India Test captain Shubman Gill on Sunday said the team has a proven blueprint for winning overseas, thanks to the legacy of senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin.
"We've learnt how to tour abroad and win matches and series. Seniors like Virat Bhai (Kohli), Rohit Bhai, and Ashwin Bhai have shown us a blueprint on how to tour away from home and win matches and series," Gill said a day after being named the 36th Test captain of India.
Calling the appointment "the ultimate honour," the 24-year-old opener said it was a childhood dream to play Test cricket for India and a greater privilege to now lead the side.
"It’s a bit overwhelming," he said. "When you start playing cricket as a kid, the dream is to play Test cricket for India, and to do it for a long time. To now get this opportunity is a great honour."
The Punjab batsman, who has already been a key part of India’s red-ball setup, said he intends to lead by example, both on and off the field. "Discipline, hard work and understanding your players as individuals is key. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, and a good leader knows how to bring the best out of each one."
India are scheduled to tour England for a five-Test series later this year, something Gill described as "a true test of character" and "one of the most exciting challenges in world cricket."
"My favourite series was the five-Test series against England at home. In red-ball cricket, the game tests you on every level - physical, mental and emotional. That’s what makes it so special,” he said.
Reflecting on leadership lessons, Gill said he has taken inspiration from both Kohli and Rohit, under whom he has played. “Virat Bhai was always aggressive and passionate. Rohit Bhai is more composed but equally attacking and tactically very sharp. I’ve learnt a lot from both of them.”
He also stressed the importance of staying mentally uncluttered while batting. “When I’m out there, I want to make decisions as a batsman, not as a captain. Overthinking adds pressure which is not required,” he noted.
Gill made his Test debut in 2020 and is widely seen as the face of India’s next generation. His first assignment as captain will be the high-profile tour of England...////...
