Shimla, Feb 18 (Reporter) The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy snowfall in the high-altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, predicting a wet spell across the state from the midnight of February 19 to the forenoon of February 21, 2025.
The alert comes as a Western Disturbance, currently positioned as a trough in the middle tropospheric level along Longitude 55°E to the north of Latitude 32°N, is expected to move east-northeastwards, bringing widespread rainfall and snowfall to the region.
According to the IMD, the Western Disturbance, coupled with favourable atmospheric conditions, is likely to cause widespread rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Himachal Pradesh, particularly from the midnight of February 19 to the forenoon of February 21.
Isolated heavy rain/snowfall is expected on February 20, especially in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, where an
Light to moderate snowfall is predicted in Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and the higher reaches of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts from the midnight of February 20 to the forenoon of February 21.
Light rainfall with occasional moderate spells and thunderstorms is likely in Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, and other parts of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu districts during the same period.
Tourist destinations such as Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Shimla are also expected to experience light snowfall, with a few moderate spells on February 20.
The IMD has warned of several potential impacts due to the adverse weather conditions:
Slippery roads leading to vehicle skidding and traffic congestion.Low visibility in affected areas.
Disruptions to essential services and routine outdoor activities.Cold day conditions in lower and mid-hill areas, with temperatures expected to drop significantly on February 20 before rising again on February 21 and 22.
Residents and travellers are advised to drive carefully and avoid unnecessary travel during the snowfall and rainfall.
Limit outdoor activities and take adequate safety measures.Follow advisories issued by the state government and concerned departments.
The IMD has also provided a district-wise weather warning for the next five days, with alerts for heavy rain, snowfall, thunderstorms, and cold day conditions across various regions of Himachal Pradesh.
The warnings are color-coded, with orange indicating a need for preparedness and yellow suggesting caution.
