Shimla, Jan 7 (Reporter) The picturesque Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh transformed into a treacherous landscape after heavy snowfall on Monday disrupted transportation across the region.
The snowfall left roads slippery, causing significant challenges for travellers and necessitating rescue operations in some areas.
A dramatic midnight rescue operation was conducted in subzero temperatures at the snowbound Chanshal Pass, where 35 travellers in seven vehicles were stranded due to sudden snowfall.
Aided by snowploughs and other equipment, a team of Public Works Department (PWD) personnel and local authorities worked tirelessly to evacuate the stranded passengers.
After several hours of effort, the travellers were safely brought down to Larot, 20 kilometres from the pass.
The snowfall, coupled with rain and sleet, severely impacted road conditions, particularly National Highway (NH) 05 between Shimla and Rampur. The road at Narkanda remains closed due to snow accumulation, forcing traffic to be diverted via Sainj to Shimla through Luhri and Sunni.
Similarly, roads such as Shimla-Ghanatti, Shimla-Shoghi, and Shimla-Theog have become slippery and dangerous for vehicles.
Despite the challenges, NH 705 (Theog to Hatkoti), NH 205 (Shimla to Bilaspur), and State Highways 8 and 13 remain open for all types of vehicles, with authorities ensuring that sand and gravel are spread to improve traction.
However, travellers are strongly advised to avoid early morning and late-night travel when icy conditions are at their worst.
Across the district, 15 major district roads and 669 village roads have been affected, with four link roads blocked. Authorities continue efforts to restore connectivity by clearing snow from affected areas.
In Shimla city, all roads are currently open, but drivers are urged to remain cautious due to intermittent rainfall and sleet, which have caused temporary disruptions, including on the Shimla Airport road.
Travellers are reminded to stay updated on road conditions and contact the District Disaster Management Operation Centre in case of emergencies at toll-free numbers 1077 or 0177-2800880.
While snowfall enhances the scenic beauty of Himachal Pradesh, it also highlights the challenges of navigating its steep, snow-covered roads. Travellers are advised to plan their journeys wisely and adhere to safety protocols to avoid potential mishaps in these challenging conditions...////...
