Shillong, Oct 5 (Reporter) Seven members of a family, including three children, were buried alive under debris due to a massive landslip triggered by torrential rainfall in Hatiasia Songma Village under Gasuapara Police Station in South Garo Hills district on Saturday. A search operation was on to retrieve the bodies of the seven persons, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed this evening. Three persons, including one minor, had died due to extensive flooding in Dalu in the West Garo Hills district on Friday, taking the number of human casualties due to the inclement weather to ten so far in the Garo Hills. Officials said the NDRF and SDRF teams were actively engaged in search and rescue efforts. The Dalu-Baghmara road link has been severed due to landslides at several places, and the Chief Minister has directed the exploration of alternative routes to restore connectivity. The region's wooden bridges have been destroyed by rising waters. The Chief Minister informed that all wooden bridges have been identified in the state and has assured their replacement with modern structures or bailey bridges. The Chief Minister has ordered the immediate reconstruction of washed-away bridges. “Electricity restoration in affected areas and minimising public disruption are also prioritised, he said. Sangma emphasised the need for extra vigilance and swift assistance from the district administrations and rescue teams as the situation remains under close surveillance.
