Kolkata, Oct 5 (Reporter) The junior medics of the state owned hospitals in West Bengal on Saturday night began an indefinite hunger strike after the deadline to the state government to concede their demands ended at 8 30 PM, official sources said.
"At first we will start an indefinite hunger strike with six junior doctors and set up CCTVs to ensure transparency about our agitation and at the same time we will contunue to serve patients in our respective hospitals," announced a junior medic before the media at Dorina channel in the city central hub of Esplanade, where they have launched the indefinite fast. The junior medics under the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front (WBJDF) on Friday evening called off their total cease work, which began on October 1 and resumed their duty from last night itself, the medic said.
The medics said they were confident of contunuing the indefinite fast to realise their 10-point demands as they were not alone now and millions of common people were rallyng behind their demand for justice for RG Kar.
They said since the government was unmoved and did not respond to their demands they were forced to go on the indefinite hunger strike. The WBJDF is demanding justice for the alleged rape-murder of a woman post-graduate trainee doctor on August 9 in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Their other demands including the removal of the state health secretary Narayan Swarooop Nigam, implementation of a centralised referral system across all hospitals and medical colleges.
The doctors have also pressed for establishing digital bed vacancy monitors in all hospitals, creation of task forces in each hospital, with junior doctors elected to oversee essential facilities like CCTV, on-call rooms, and bathrooms.
Besides, they have also demanded increased police protection in the hospitals, hiring permanent female police personnel, immediate filling of vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers...////...
