Feeble WD may trigger snowfall over isolated higher reaches of J&K: MeT

Srinagar, Jan 12 (Reporter) As Kashmir continues to freeze, an approaching feeble Western Disturbance (WD) may cause snowfall over the isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Friday. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said under the influence of the WD, the weather will remain generally cloudy in Jammu and Kashmir with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches. Due to prolonged dry spells, the maximum temperature at many stations recorded 6 to 8°C above normal with the highest maximum temperature recorded over Banihal station (23.4°C) on January 11. The previous all-time record was 22.6°C on January 18, 2003, the MeT office said. It said contrary to this, the places engulfed with dense fog recorded 9 to 10°C below normal. Jammu, Samba and Kathua Friday recorded 8.6, 8.8 and 8.9 °C maximum temperature on January 11. Years with prolonged dry spells also showed similar trends of maximum temperature in the past. (2018, 2016, 2015) The dry weather is likely to continue till January 20 with feeble WDs approaching on January 12 & 17 evening. The weather will remain generally dry from January 18-20, It said. An independent observer, Kashmir weather said as a result of weak Western Disturbance, light snowfall is possible at Sonamarg, other higher reaches of Ganderbal district, Drass 40% chance, Gurez, higher reaches of Kupwara and Bandipora, Pahalgam, Kargil 25 - 30% chance towards late night today or tomorrow morning. There are 15-20% chances of snowfall at Gulmarg and other higher reaches of Anantnag, Leh 15 - 20% chance during the period, he said. There is no letup in freezing cold weather conditions in Kashmir valley as Srinagar recorded a low of -4.0°C on Friday against the -5.0°C on Thursday. It was 1.9°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season. There was a slight improvement in night temperature at Pahalgam, recording a low of-5.3°C against the -6.0°C recorded the previous night. It was 1.8°C above normal for the tourist spot of south Kashmir. Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National highway had a low of -4.2°C against the -4.6°C recorded a day ago while mercury at Kokernag settled at -2.4°C for the third consecutive day on Friday. Gulmarg showed further improvement in minimum temperature on Friday and recorded at -3.2°C against the -3.5°C recorded on Thursday. It was 4.74°C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir. Kupwara recorded a low of -4.4°C against the -5.3°C recorded the previous day. It was 1.5°C below normal for the frontier Kashmir district during this period of the season, the MeT office said...////...
