Bhubaneswar, Sep 9 (Reporter) The Odisha government on Monday alerted the collectors of several coastal districts to take all precautionary measures in view of a deep depression over the northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal.
IMD sources said the deep depression has moved slowly north-northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered about 70 km southeast of Puri, 140 km east of Gopalpur, and 120 km south-southwest of Paradip this morning.
It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards and cross the Odisha coast near Puri by noon on Monday and thereafter very likely to move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh during the subsequent two days.
IMD sources said the system is under continuous surveillance by Doppler Weather Radars at Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur.
The IMD had issued yellow warnings to several districts where it said light to moderate rains and thunderstorms with lightning likely to affect on Monday.
The people have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly moved to safer places to protect from lightning strikes.
The Special Relief Commissioner (STC) office has asked the collectors of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, and Gajapati to take all precautions in view of the deep depression.
It said heavy to very heavy rainfall (77 cm to 20 cm) was likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
There will be water logging in low lying areas and underpass roads and some damages to the vegetables and horticultural crops, the SRC office said and asked the district collectors to keep the administrative machinery in readiness to meet any eventuality.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting convened by state Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Ahuja on Sunday asked the district collectors to shift the people from the low-lying areas to safer places and the engineers at the field level to keep a close watch on the embankments...////...
