Mumbai Nov 18 (Reporter) The high-voltage Maharashtra Assembly campaign that saw an intense battle of polemics between two alliances - the ruling Maha Yuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi - ended at 5 p.m on Monday.
The polls are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, and stretch up to 5 p,m. across the 288 constituencies in the western Indian state, which occupies a pivotal position in the country for its thriving commerce and vibrant culture that includes one of the largest entertainment industries in the world.
While Mahayuti comprises the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-headed NCP, the Maha Vikas Aghadi includes Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar-helmed NCP (SP).
A total of 9,70,25,119 electors - 5,00,22,739 men, 4,69,96,279 women and 6,101.belonging to the third gender community - . are eligible to choose their representatives from among 3771 candidates.
The electoral rolls include 6,41,425 persons with disabilities, 116,170 service voters, 22,22,704 young or first-time voters, a staggering 47,389 centenarians and 2,40,919 aged above 85.
The electioneering saw bigwigs from the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president J P Nadda, union ministers Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, besides chief minister Eknath Shinde and his counterparts from several states go all out to woo the voters.
The MVA campaign was marshalled by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, NCP (SP) President Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, Aditya Thackeray.
The no-holds-barred campaigning saw parties screaming hoarse with promises of freebies, doles and dreams of better days ahead. There was a keen competition between rivals to better the offerings to checkmate the other side.
There were verbal duels galore – direct or snide attacks, questioning each other’s political credentials, with some lower-lung leaders stooping low and even uttering the unprintable...////...
