Agartala, April 21 (Reporter) The Chennai police on Monday took away a local jewellery shop owner from Bishalgarh in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, who was detained in a gold theft case in Tamil Nadu’s capital.
A group of businessmen in Bishalgarh tried to prevent police from taking Satya Ranjan Karmakar to Chennai, but finally, the police managed to take off from the Agartala airport. They demanded that Karmakar should be interrogated in Tripura and tried in a local court.
According to a report, based on the statement of the previously arrested two youths, Ripan Miah and Bitan Miah, from a village near Bishalgarh, the police detained a staff member of a jewellery shop identified as Saiful Islam for allegedly stealing gold ornaments from the house of a senior IAS officer’s daughter.
Islam reportedly admitted that the stolen gold was melted in their jewellery shop. The Chennai police detained the jewellery shop owner, Satya Ranjan Karmakar, and brought him to the Bishalgarh police station.
When information spread that police would take Karmakar to Chennai for further interrogation, local businessmen gathered at the police station and opposed the police move.
Police said based on CCTV footage, Chennai police had arrested Ripan and Bitan last week alleging that Ripan was working as a sanitation staff in the house and masterminded the theft.
