New Delhi, Mar 28 (Reporter) Justice Yashwant Varma’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court was formally notified on Friday by the Central government following the Supreme Court Collegium’s March 24 recommendations.
The apex judiciary has directed the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court to refrain from assigning any judicial work to Justice Varma.
In an official statement, the Supreme Court announced: "The Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court for the time being has been asked not to assign any judicial work to Justice Yashwant Varma, when he assumes charge as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court."
The Collegium arrived at the decision after convening two meetings, first on March 20 and then on March 24.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Sanjiv Khanna has asked the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Arun Bhansali to suspend Justice Varma's judicial work.
A similar mandate was earlier issued for the Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.
The development follows a fire at Justice Varma’s residence on the evening of March 14, which reportedly led to the discovery of unaccounted cash by firefighters.
A video of the burnt cash recovery was allegedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the High Court.
Justice Varma and his wife were not present in Delhi at the time, as they were traveling in Madhya Pradesh. His daughter and elderly mother were at home when the fire occurred.
On March 21, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an in-house probe and constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The Supreme Court has also published a report from the Delhi High Court Chief Justice regarding the incident, along with Justice Varma’s response.
Justice Varma, born in 1969, obtained his LLB degree from Rewa University, Madhya Pradesh, and enrolled as an advocate in 1992. He previously served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.
He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2013 and appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court in October 2014. He became a permanent judge in February 2017 and was later transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed office on October 11, 2021...////...
