Shimla, June 14 (Reporter) The unrelenting heatwave in Himachal Pradesh continues to fuel devastating forest and grass fires, claiming yet another life within 24 hours.
The latest victim, Abhishek, a 12-year-old boy from the Giripar area, tragically succumbed to severe burns after a valiant attempt to extinguish a grass fire.
The incident occurred in Dimanu village of Badwas Panchayat in Sirmour district. On Sunday, a fierce fire broke out in the grass, prompting nearby residents to rush to the scene.
Victim Abhishek (son of Mohan Singh,) accidentally slipped and fell into the raging flames.
Despite the immediate efforts of his family and neighbours, Abhishek suffered critical burns.
He was rushed to Civil Hospital Paonta Sahib, where doctors referred him to PGI Chandigarh. Abhishek fought for his life for four days but succumbed Thursday.
His death follows another of a 75-year-old woman, Nikki Devi, in Hamirpur district's Bhagetu village.
She was caught in a forest fire while working in her fields and could not escape the flames. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at Medical College Hamirpur.
The spate of fires have caused significant destruction across the region, with 239 incidents reported in Hamirpur alone, ravaging over 2,300 hectares of forest.
