Kolkata, Apr 20 (Reporter) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her alleged failure to protect the people during the anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protests in Murshidabad district.
BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya, in a post on X, charged Banerjee with misleading the people.
The CM on Saturday, in a letter, alleged that the violence in Murshidabad district was orchestrated by the BJP and RSS, adopting “divisive" politics between the two communities.
The BJP's IT cell head wrote on X, that whenever Mamata's "political standing is under threat, she resorts to targeting the Hindu community".
"This raises a serious question of credibility and impartiality. As both the Chief Minister and Home Minister of the state—who directly oversees the CID—how can Mamata Banerjee be expected to ensure an unbiased investigation into the Murshidabad violence, especially when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising top state officials has been formed under her own government?
“West Bengal police were already aware of the rallies. Why, then, were they not stopped in advance? Did mobs, weapons, and stones materialize out of thin air?" asked Malviya in his post on X.
"Mamata Banerjee has written a letter appealing for peace, yet the Chief Minister has not found it appropriate to visit the refugee camps in Malda—where Hindu men and women have taken shelter after fleeing Islamic persecution in Murshidabad," Malviya wrote.
He said Banerjee "has repeatedly misled the public" and demanded that, "accountability is long overdue", and she must step down.
“Using her official letterhead as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee— expected to serve all citizens impartially, is instead blaming the principal opposition party (BJP) and a non-political organization (RSS) for her administration’s failures. This, despite her own police force debunking her narrative that the anti-Hindu violence in Murshidabad was incited by external elements," Malviya claimed.
The Bengal CM in the letter said: "BJP and its allies have suddenly become very aggressive in West Bengal. These allies include RSS...These forces are using the backdrop of an unfortunate incident that happened under provocation.
"They are using the backdrop to play divisive politics...My appeal is: please remain calm. We condemn communal riots and must curb them. The criminals behind the riots are being dealt with strongly. But, simultaneously, we must avoid mutual mistrust and distrust. The majority and the minority communities must work together and take care of each other..."
“They are eager to use an unfortunate incident that has occurred as a result of provocation. They are using it to do the politics of division. They want to play the divide and rule game. It is a dangerous game," she said.
She went on to say, "They want to incite riots, and riots can affect everyone. We love all. We want to stay together. We condemn riots. We are against riots. They want to divide us for some narrow electoral politics. For maintaining law and order and for saving human lives and dignity, we have taken strong actions. Two police officers-in-charge have been removed. The police are investigating. Further actions are being taken." she clarified.
