Bihar: Junior docs protest Kolkata rape-murder case, services hit

Patna, Aug 16 (Reporter) The medical services were affected in Patna on Friday following the protest of the junior doctors against the recent horrifying incident of alleged rape and murder of a trainee medic in Kolkata. The emergency services and OPD were paralysed in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), and Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) following the protest of the Junior Doctors. The junior doctors of IGIMS closed the main gate of the Hospital and demonstrated at the main Bailey Road. Both emergency and OPD services were shut down in the hospital. According to the Medical Superintendent of IGIMS Manish Mandal, the doctors had given a written assurance that the emergency services would be run but some of the junior medics shut down the emergency unit. IGIMS officials said a meeting with the junior doctors was on for the resumption of the emergency services in the hospital. Similar was the situation at PMCH where the junior doctors protesting against the Kolkata incident, shut down the emergency as well as the OPD counter and no one was being allowed to go towards the emergency care services. No registration was being done at the counter at PMCH. Due to the protest, the senior doctors were also not available in the emergency at PMCH. Meanwhile, former National Vice President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Sachhidanand Singh said no one is safe in PMCH as it has lots of entrances making the campus vulnerable. He said the government should ensure the security and safety of the doctors. The junior doctors and medical students across the country were frightened by Kolkata's incident. Meanwhile, the emergency services were paralysed at NMCH where the protesting junior doctors locked the main gate. Around eight patients out of the 27 admitted to the hospital in the morning left against medical advice. Dr Javed Akhtar at the emergency said that the senior doctors were treating the patients admitted to the emergency and no new patients were being admitted. NMCH Principal Dr. Usha Kumari held an emergency meeting with the senior doctors to handle the situation. Describing the incident with the medical intern in Kolkata as the most shameful, unfortunate, and condemnable, she appealed to the striking doctors to provide the emergency medical services. She said in the given situation the senior doctors have been put on duty in the emergency. All doctors were scared about their safety and security. Meanwhile, a report from Darbhanga quoting IMA district chapter President doctor Hari Damodar Singh and Secretary doctor Amitabh Sinha said all doctors at Darbhanga Medical College Hospital have called on to suspend nonemergency Medical Services for 24 hours commencing from August 17 at 6:00 AM. They demanded immediate execution of the Medical Protection Act and stern punishment against the culprits responsible for the West Bengal Medical College incident. They also demanded that status of martyrs be given to the doctors who lost their lives while on duty...////...
