Kolkata, May 3 (Reporter) In a significant move to address the aftermath of recent communal unrest, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the violence-affected regions of Suti and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad district on May 5. The visit comes in the wake of deadly protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, which claimed three lives and injured several others last month. According to officials from the district administration, the Chief Minister will arrive at Berhampore Circuit House on the evening of May 4. The following day, she will address a public rally at Chhabghati KD High School ground in Suti before touring the areas like Dhuliyan and Shamsherganj that witnessed the worst of the violence. This will be Banerjee’s first visit to the region since she last chaired an administrative meeting at Lalbag Nawab Bahadur Institution on January 20. Mamata is expected to distribute benefits under the Bangla Awas Yojana to residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed during the violence. The state administration has so far identified 316 houses that were razed in the course of the unrest. Relief and compensation measures are high on the agenda for the Chief Minister’s visit, with a focus on rebuilding both infrastructure and community trust. The Chief Minister sanctioned Rs 10 lakh in compensation for the families of those killed and pledged that the state government would fully fund their children's education. Speaking earlier at a public event in Goaltore, West Medinipur, where she inaugurated a 125 MW solar photovoltaic plant, Banerjee describing the events as “unfortunate,” had alleged that the violence was fuelled by external elements with the complicity of a few local residents. She had also promised at that time to go to Murshidabad once the situation was under control and the administration gave her a green signal. The violence in Murshidabad had escalated during protests over amendments to the Waqf Act, leading to intense clashes between protestors and police. Several vehicles, including police vans, were set on fire, roads were barricaded, and security personnel were targeted with stone pelting. The situation had deteriorated to the point that the Calcutta High Court intervened, ordering the deployment of central security forces to restore law and order. Earlier, despite Mamata’s request, Governor C V Ananda Bose and several BJP leaders visited the violence-affected areas of Murshidabad to express solidarity with families displaced by the communal unrest...////...
