Bangladesh Nationalist Party demands cancellation of Union Parishads

Dhaka, Sep 27 (Reporter) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has demanded cancellation of Union Parishads (UPs) formed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, media reports said. The demand was raised following a decision taken in a meeting of the party’s highest policy-making forum, the National Standing Committee, said a press release signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Dhaka Tribune reported. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting at the party chairperson’s Gulshan political office here, joining it virtually from London, the reports said. The release stated that a free, fair, and impartial national election cannot be held while maintaining the functionality of the Union Parishads, which were formed during Sheikh Hasina's regime. According to media reports, the BNP standing committee expressed deep concern over the conflicts in the districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs).
